What is Virtual Volunteering?

As Canada’s National Volunteer Week progresses, we shine a spotlight on the variety of volunteer opportunities available.  Volunteering encompasses many areas and can include ‘virtual volunteering’.

From the comfort of your home, you can volunteer virtually with the use of a computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone. Virtual volunteering welcomes individuals to engage in one-time, short-term or ongoing tasks and projects through an internet connection or phone.

This flexible volunteer role allows volunteers to complete tasks or work on projects that work for their schedule and is not limited by where you live or physical ability. Around the globe, across our country and right here at home, you can choose to volunteer virtually.

Virtual volunteering allows new opportunities to those:

  • with mobility limitations that cannot easily access program locations
  • without access to transportation
  • in remote areas that wish to service programs outside of their area
  • with skilled expertise in positions that do not require direct client contact …. and more

Need ideas? Think about what you want to share or learn through volunteering. What is your passion, what would be meaningful to you? This might include virtual supports in the areas of administration, data input or reports, event planning, Board and committee support, communications, marketing, social media, photography, research and more.

There are a variety of virtual volunteering opportunities, click here to find one that is just right for you!
