Leo Murphy

After retiring 5 years ago Leo and his wife moved from Ajax to their dream home here in the Royal City. Once they were settled in, Leo became involved with the Guelph Community Health Centre (Guelph CHC). In his regular role Leo is a Garden Fresh Box volunteer. He delivers fresh vegetable boxes to over 17 different sites throughout Guelph. He also volunteers with the Food Access program where he provides transportation to folks who need help getting to local emergency food providers, like the Guelph Food Bank and North End Harvest Market. But Leo’s work doesn’t stop there. He is always aware of the other tasks that require attention and often pitches in whenever he is needed. This includes offering to pick up empty Garden Fresh bins a few days before they are due to be refilled. He even stores the boxes in his own garage!
When asked what his favourite part of volunteering with the Guelph CHC is, he’s quick to cite the people and his many pleasant interactions with them. This experience has also heightened his awareness of food security challenges that exist locally: “There is a real need in Guelph. It leaves you with a lasting impression that reality tv, or the news, just can’t convey. Being directly involved in food security gives you a whole new appreciation for the challenges people face.”
Leo, you are an important part of the Guelph CHC team. As Hannah, the Volunteer Coordinator writes, “Leo is infectiously cheerful and welcoming of all people. The kindness that Leo shows our community with his volunteer work is an inspiration for us all.”
Thank you for all that you do, Leo. P.S. A special thanks for bringing donuts every month 😉
