Volunteering has taught Kithio the pursuit of excellence

Volunteering is a central pillar in my life, and enriches every day in countless ways – by providing opportunities to learn new skills, build strong friendships, and afford chances to strengthen each new community I’ve settled in.
Having lived in numerous places that span the globe, I’ve found that one constant ingredient present in all healthy and thriving communities is a robust volunteer presence. For me, volunteering provides diverse opportunities to learn about each unique community – including its needs, its people, its culture, its challenges, and its strengths. And it enables me to act – to help those in need, no matter the location.
Volunteering reminds me that while no single individual can solve the world’s problems, people working together can – and do – make a substantial impact. I am constantly reminded of the words of the late Nelson Mandela, who noted: “It always seems impossible until it is done.”
Whether I’m tackling a major initiative on behalf of the Guelph Chamber Membership or assembling a new bike to get back out on the trails, volunteering has taught me the importance of focus and the pursuit of excellent.
