Featuring Ryan Jaspers-Fayer

PIN is pleased to feature Ryan Jasper-Fayer in our series on the Young Professionals on Board (YPOB) program as we seek to appreciate participants, employers and local nonprofits and charities participating in this unique program.

Why Young Professionals on Board? Ryan’s place of employment provided him with the opportunity to participate in the Young Professionals on Board program. Ryan wanted to take part to learn more about how boards operate as well as get more involved in the community. This was a great way for Ryan to be more involved in his community and simultaneously develop on a professional level as well.

Standout moments… With COVID, things were very difficult for not-for-profit organizations and Focus on Nature was no different. For Ryan, the standout moment was how the board came together with new solutions to try and achieve the goals of the organizations while navigating through such a difficult and unprecedented time.

The experience… Ryan’s experience was nothing short of great. Ryan was part of an amazing organization and a fantastic board of directors. Ryan learned a lot and was able to participate in many facets of the board. Roseanne Morris, the president of the board helped mentor Ryan through the whole process and Ryan was very fortunate to be able to learn from her many years of experience being involved with Focus on Nature.

Biggest takeaways… Ryan’s biggest takeaway was getting a much better understanding of how boards operate. Ryan also got to see all the behind the scenes of planning that an organization has to go through in order to achieve their goals through a very tough year. It was a great learning experience.

Outside of work and volunteering…  Ryan and his wife love to spend time by the pool at their house and are about to be welcoming their first child in July which has taken much of their time planning for their exciting future.

Entering into its 5th year, the Young Professionals on Board (YPOB) is aimed at connecting young professionals with established leaders in our community.  Young professionals, up to the age of 35 years, will be matched with mentors who sit on a local Board of Directors. This project will provide the opportunity for young professionals to learn about board governance and, with the assistance of a mentor, participate in the governance of a local nonprofit agency. The goal of the program is to increase community leadership capacity to support succession-planning for quality board leadership in the nonprofit sector.

YPOB continues to add value to those that participate, and mentoring boards and our community is better for it. If you wish to participate (as a mentor/mentee) or nominate someone you know can add value to the nonprofit world, please visit this link or contact [email protected]
