Bill, Doreen & Vera are August’s Volunteers of the Month

St. Joseph’s Health Centre Guelph has been a staple of the Guelph community since its origin in 1861. Its values of compassion, accountability, respect and excellence are no better demonstrated than through its dedicated volunteer base. Included in these volunteers are Bill and Doreen Keogh and Vera Forraro, who have volunteered with St. Joseph’s Health Centre for 21 and 22 years respectively. The three met on Bill and Doreen’s first shift volunteering, and have since been the fun loving, energetic core of the Thursday night bingo activity as well as great friends.
Bingo is a favourite of the residents of St. Joseph’s, not only for the chance to win prizes, but for the fun and laughter involved. As well, the volunteers describe the joy of chatting with residents during this activity, stating there was always a story to look forward to each week. In addition to running bingo, Bill, Doreen and Vera have worn many other hats as volunteers throughout the years. This includes assisting with Christmas and birthday parties and giving tours to prospective residents and families.
Doreen claimed, “not one minute was wasted volunteering, it was all enjoyable!”
Bill, Doreen and Vera have recently retired from volunteering with St. Joseph’s and will be missed sincerely by the staff, residents and peer volunteers. Alaina Holman, volunteer coordinator at St. Joseph’s, says, “Thank you is not enough for these three remarkable volunteers. They give so much and are so humble about their contributions.”
Thank you Bill, Doreen and Vera for your unfaltering devotion to St. Joseph’s and your community, you have touched the lives of many through your service.
A special thank you to Linamar for sponsoring this month’s award.
